It’s Not Easy Being Green…or Is It? 20 Easy Ways to GoGreen

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Carbon footprints, hybrid cars, alternative energy, global warming, greenhouse gases, carbon emissions…the list goes on and on. The environment is in trouble and we are now faced with the responsibility of fixing it; or, at least, changing the way we do things so that we don’t make it any worse. But how do we do it? What do I know about carbon emissions or greenhouse gases? More importantly, what can I do, in my own little piece of the world, that would even make a difference? It seems like such an overwhelming task.

Here is a list of 20 things that you can do in your home, your office, your classroom, your church, wherever you are, that can really make a difference. You might even be doing some of these things already and not even realize that you’re helping the environment.

1. Go Recycled.

Use recycled office products and furniture whenever you can. Most can be recycled again, once you’re done with them, so they help reduce waste, time after time!

2. Clean Green.

Environmentally friendly cleaners are not only good for the earth; they’re good for you, too! Most are nontoxic and free of irritants, so cleaning is more pleasant.

3. Lights Out!

If a room isn’t being used for 15 minutes or more, turn off the lights.

4. Go Natural.

Take advantage of natural lighting, in spaces where it’s adequate for work.

5. Power Down.

At the end of the workday, turn off your computer to save power.

6. Nap Time!

Set the office computers to “go to sleep” automatically when they’re not being used. These short breaks can result in big savings in energy.

7. Travel Less, Save More.

Video conference or teleconference whenever you can. You’ll save time and money, plus you’ll help reduce emissions in the environment.

8. Clear the Air.

Accent your office with green plants. They add a natural touch, while helping reduce indoor pollution.

9. Recycle it!

Place recycling containers for recyclable materials in a convenient location in your office. Post instructions near the containers so everyone knows what to do.

10. Bring Your Own Bag.

If you “brown bag it” at lunch, use a reusable bag instead of paper or plastic lunch bags.

11. Reuse it!

Buy rewritable CDs, DVDs and portable mini-drives for data storage and reuse them over and over again.

12. Turn it off!

If there is equipment in your office that’s not often used, keep it turned off when it’s not needed.

13. Get on the Bus!

Use mass transit trains or buses whenever possible. It’s more money- and energy-efficient than driving a car or taking a taxi.

14. Share the Knowledge.

Pass along recycling tips to others in your office to encourage greener living. Post hints on a community board or contribute to the office newsletter.

15. Encourage Green Commuting.

Facilitate green commuting options. There are many ways you can make it easy or offer perks for those who choose the eco-friendly way to get to work: provide bike racks for bicyclists, help organize carpools, etc.

16. Get in Tune.

If you drive to work…or anywhere else…be sure to have your car serviced regularly. It’ll run more efficiently and save gas.

17. Lighten Up!

Clean out your car trunk and remove luggage or equipment racks when not in use. The lighter load means savings on fuel costs!

18. Be a Star!

When replacing office equipment, be sure and look for Energy Star certified products for energy-efficient use.

19. Go the Alternate Route.

When buying company vehicles, choose energy efficient models, and consider the alternate fuel or hybrid options to maximize your investment.

20. Reuse or Recycle.

If you upgrade computer equipment, cell phones or other electronics, donate the old equipment to a non-profit group. For non-functioning equipment, find a recycler who accepts electronics items.
